The course wants to show the vital importance of language as a semiotic resource in constructing and reproducing socio-cultural worlds. Doing so, the course aims to destroy the stereotype that views the anthropological study of language as a 'subdiscipline’ that can be safely ignored if one is not interested in the 'technicalities' of language and language use. The course will provide students with a firm grounding in language-oriented ethnographic research traditions. Upon successful completion of the course, students should have acquired critical insight into theoretical and methodological issues in the anthropological study of language.
This course will explore various theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of language as a semiotic resource for social actors and communities. We will seek to understand how language emerges in the interactions between persons, and both reflects and creates socio-cultural worlds. We will ask questions such as: How do human beings use language in conjunction with other resources to build their social worlds in face-to-face interactions? How is language used to reinforce, challenge, or reconfigure relationships of power? How are language and identity intertwined in social interactions? What are the consequences of language for national policies and politics? Additional topics to be covered will include: speech communities and communities of practice; language and social inequality (including gender, class, and ethnicity); agency and resistance; language acquisition and socialization; and debates over multilingualism, multiculturalism, and nationalism. Readings for this course consist of scholarly articles that focus on a variety of social and cultural contexts.

Voor de bijeenkomsten in het eerste deel (hoorcolleges) en het tweede deel (schrijfseminar) bestaat een aanwezigheidsplicht. Mocht je onverhoopt niet aanwezig kunnen zijn, laat ons dat dan zo spoedig mogelijk, in elk geval voor de bijeenkomst, weten met vermelding van de reden van afwezigheid. Je mag maximaal één bijeenkomst missen gedurende de module.
Beoordeling vindt plaats op basis van twee onderdelen:
(1) Literatuurtoetsen (af te nemen tijdens de hoorcolleges)
(2) Eindpaper
Het is van essentieel belang goed voorbereid te verschijnen op de hoorcolleges. Tijdens elk college wordt over de te lezen literatuur een toets afgenomen.
In de totstandkoming van het eindcijfer worden de
afzonderlijke onderdelen als volgt gewogen:
Tussenopdrachten: 40% (het cijfer van de tussentoetsen is het gemiddelde van de 5 beste toetsresultaten)
Eindpaper: 60%.
Let op: voor de tussenopdrachtenen bestaat geen herkansingsmogelijkheid. Ook voor de eindversie van het afsluitende paper bestaat geen herkansingsmogelijkheid omdat het eindpaper een herziene versie is van een becommentarieerde eerste versie.
De deadlines voor het inleveren van de tussentijdse opdrachten in het tweede deel van de module zullen door de docenten strikt worden gehanteerd. Niet of niet tijdig inleveren van de tussenopdrachten resulteert in uitsluiting van verdere deelname aan de module. Alleen in aantoonbare situaties van overmacht kan hiervan éénmalig worden afgeweken en uitstel van 1 dag worden verleend. De opdrachten dienen ingeleverd te worden uiterlijk dinsdag 14:00 uur voorafgaand aan de bijeenkomst waarin de opdracht besproken wordt. De opdrachten dien je uitgeprint in te leveren in het postvakje van de docent en te posten op het Blackboard Discussion Board.
De deadline voor het inleveren van het eindpaper is vrijdag 19 juni 2008, 17:00 uur.
Het eindpaper dient uitgeprint, duidelijk voorzien van titelpagina met naam
en contactgegevens, paginanummering, en bibliografie, ingeleverd te worden in
het postvakje van de docent. Papers die niet aan
genoemde eisen voldoen worden niet beoordeeld.
Het eindpaper wordt door Ephorus op plagiaat gecontroleerd. Nadere instructies omtrent het indienen van het paper bij Ephorus volgen.
Voor alle duidelijkheid wijzen we je er op dat plagiaat streng bestraft wordt. Plagiaat is een vorm of diefstal, bedrog en fraude, die vaak het gevolg is van slordigheid, of tijdsdruk. Lees de UvA-pagina over fraude en plagiaat en neem ook eens een kijkje op de volgende pagina's waar uitgelegd wordt wat plagiëren is, waarom het verkeerd is, en hoe je het vermijdt.
In de literatuur vind je een combinatie van theorie en etnografische case studies van specifieke onderwerpen die in de module behandeld worden. Je leert zo hoe antropologen deze onderwerpen bestuderen. In de hoorcolleges komen theoretische kwesties aan bod die belangrijk zijn om de literatuur te kunnen plaatsen binnen belangrijke discussies in de sociale wetenschappen.
De literatuur is online beschikbaar via de digitale bibliotheek of via blackboard. Artikelen uit de digitale bibliotheek zijn alleen te downloaden via computers binnen het UvA-domein. Als de UvA niet de provider is van je internetservice thuis, dien je UvA-vpn te downloaden en installeren op je thuis-PC om toegang te krijgen tot de digitale bibliotheek.
